Dr. Muna Osman is a doctor-prepared nurse practitioner with over 20 years of experience in healthcare. A Somali-American mother and first-generation refugee, she arrived in the U.S. 25 years ago with her one-year-old daughter.
Muna is a passionate advocate and policy leader dedicated to advancing healthcare equity, particularly for Somali women and marginalized communities. As a co-founder of the "Mama Amaan” program, a groundbreaking initiative addressing critical gaps in maternity care for Somali women, Muna has worked to ensure culturally competent and accessible services for underserved populations. Her commitment to improving healthcare outcomes is further reflected in her role as a published co-author of a project aimed at inspiring and advancing healthcare solutions for Somali women.
Muna’s leadership in policymaking is exemplified by her pivotal role in passing SB5453 in Washington State, a landmark policy achievement that highlights her ability to drive meaningful change through advocacy and collaboration.
A survivor of Female Genital Cutting (FGC), Muna has transformed her personal experience into a lifelong mission to combat this harmful practice. Her early advocacy, rooted in education and awareness, culminated in a capstone project focused on the health impacts of FGC. She has also participated in the Office of Women's Health roundtable conference on FGC in the U.S. contributing her expertise to national conversations on eradicating FGC and supporting survivors.
As the founder of the Holistic Family Care Clinic and co-founder of the WA State Coalition to End FGM/C, Muna works tirelessly to improve maternity care services for Somali women in Seattle. Her advocacy extends to ensuring refugees and individuals with limited English proficiency receive equitable healthcare. Fluent in Arabic, Somali, and English, Muna bridges critical language and cultural barriers to provide compassionate care.
Muna works to bridge the healthcare gap in her community, inspiring women to take charge of their health. She firmly believes that healthy mothers raise healthy children, and healthy children build healthy nations. Muna’s work challenges cultural norms surrounding FGC while promoting education and awareness, striving toward a future free from its harmful effects. Through her advocacy, policy leadership, and commitment to fostering inclusive and equitable communities, Muna continues to inspire meaningful change and improve lives.
